Boston Ranks #1 Most Innovative City in the World

Even though Mayor Bloomberg disagrees, Boston’s doing some amazing things in the innovation space. Despite being one of the oldest cities in the country, Boston is consistently on the cutting edge of finding, inventing and capitalizing on everything hot and new.

From TechStars to MassChallenge, startups are popping up left and right around the Hub. For innovators, there’s no better place to be, in our opinion. Now, 2thinknow has proven Boston is indeed the innovation center of the world. 2thinknow has released their 2011 Innovation Cities Index, which looks at cities across the globe and analyzes just how innovative they are. Out of 331 international cities, Boston ranked number one. According to a press release from 2thinknow:

“The analysts first named Boston as the second-top global innovation destination in 2007. In 2011, the analysts stated that Boston’s dominant institutions Harvard and MIT, coupled with a strengthening start-up and arts in global networks kept the city number one overall globally across multiple economic segments in the turbulent national economic cycle.”

Boston beat out San Francisco, whose Silicon Valley dominance landed it the second place spot on the list. New York trailed behind, taking the number four spot on the global list. Other American cities topping the list include Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, D.C. and Austin.

Results were calculated by analyzing 62 indicators on how cities are able to generate product, process, service and other innovation types across an urban economy. Results were then classified into five bands of performance, such as Nexus and Hub cities, which indicates how many types of innovation are present in that city. We’re proud to see Boston at the top of the list, but definitely not surprised.
